The Howard Performing Arts Center is an elite concert hall designed specifically for the performance of music, located on the campus of Andrews University. The hall’s acoustics were designed by Kirkegaard Associates, well known for their renovation of the Chicago Symphony Center and their acoustically designed environments across the United States and Europe.

The Hall was built with specifics that work together to reflect sound and create a rich cathedral sound. The details are without limit, right down to black circular vents distributed under the seats in the hall. These dispersed vents prevent the sound of a rush of air when heating or air conditioning is on, by flowing air continuously and silently through the numerous vents. No wall stands parallel to another; rear walls are curved to reflect sound, and side walls are angled. The walls are painted with a sealant designed to prevent sound from being absorbed. The wood paneling along the stage is tight grained Cherry wood. Curtains run along the rear walls of the hall as well as along the side that are adjusted to the performer to ensure the most quality acoustics.

Since the opening concert in October of 2003, the building has been the home for many genres of beautiful music. It is so acoustically sensitive that little sound reinforcement is needed, though amplification equipment is available. By not using artificial amplification, when appropriate, patrons hear pure sounds, exactly as the performer creates them. This environment is especially conducive for chamber music performances.

This state-of-the-art performance facility attracts world-class performers from the international classical circuit, like Christopher Parkening and the Vienna Choir Boys, as well as top Contemporary Christian artists like FFH. The acoustic perfection and astonishing design make it the architectural gem of the Andrews campus. Most importantly, the Howard Center provides an invaluable resource to students and the community, offering an ideal environment for anything from Friday vespers to student recitals to awards banquets. Don’t miss your chance to experience the ambiance of a Howard Center event.
