How To Advertise A Concert
- A Summary -
1. Distribute PSAs.
Retype the public service announcement (PSA) to be sent to all radio and television stations (see below). Community bulletin board services are free. Don't forget cable bulletin boards. Call all Christian radio stations and confirm that they have copies of the artist's compact disks and inform them that the artist is coming for a concert. Ask if they are interested in a live radio interview and give the artist's 800 number. If they do not have the artist's music and their format would allow for air play, call Morning Song's office immediately with the address information on the station and complimentary CDs will be mailed. Suggest that church members begin requesting DJs to play songs by the artist.
2. Purchase Radio Ads.
It is unrealistic to depend on public service announcements only. Your community will value this special event in proportion to the value you place in it. Paid ads communicate your expectations that others will want to know about your event! Besides, if you can pay for a few promotional ads that use cuts from the artist's current CD, this will insure more attention given to PSAs. Steve Darmody has professionally produced 60 second radio ads.
3. Use Bulletin Announcements, Newsletters & Personal Letters.
Publicize the event in you church through bulletin announcements several weeks prior to the date, making each announcement more prominent as the date approaches. Retype the bulletin announcements on your stationery and send to all area churches with your personal request for their assistance in promoting this concert. Feature an article in your church newsletter and send special letters of invitation to missing members or interests. It's always best if you can have it hand delivered with a visit.
4. Print Bulletin Inserts/Fliers.
Duplicate the camera-ready bulletin insert front and back and then cut in half. Place in each bulletin one week before the concert. Encourage them to be used as fliers to make personal invitations to friends and family. Collect unused inserts and use as handouts to visitors on the concert weekend.
5. Submit Concert Information to the Press. Purchase an Ad.
Write a cover letter on your stationery to accompany the enclosed press release and black & white photo. Distribute your packet to the local newspaper. Don't forget the smaller newspapers. Extra b&w photos are available on request. An advance phone call to the newspaper will tell you who you should direct the release to, and could develop into a feature story on the artist's appearance. Newspaper display ads are also essential to covering the event.
6. Display posters
